Who is the Commanders' best trade asset ahead of the NFL draft?

We are almost one month away from the 2025 NFL draft. The Washington Commanders hold the No. 29 overall pick in the next month's draft but only have five selections across the three-day event.

Washington general manager Adam Peters is a draft-and-develop guy. Due to the poor roster he inherited from the previous regime, Peters had to rely more on free agency than he would've liked. Since the 2024 NFL trade deadline, Peters has parted with more draft picks in 2025 and 2026, using them to land cornerback Marshon Lattimore, left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. All three players help make Washington better immediately, but Peters must also keep an eye on the future.

You can bet that Peters will come away from next month's draft with more than five picks. There's a good chance the Commanders move around and add more picks. But there are other ways to accrue more picks. Washington could trade a veteran player.

Pro Football Focus recently named every NFL team's best trade asset ahead of the draft. PFF's pick for the Commanders: running back Brian Robinson Jr.

The Commanders’ offseason has centered on upgrading the pieces around Jayden Daniels. In that sense, it might seem paradoxical to trade Robinson, but there would be good reasons to do so.
His PFF rushing grade has declined in all three seasons, and his 34 missed tackles forced in 2024 tied for 27th out of 31 qualified rushers. With Robinson only under contract for one more year and this draft class being rich at the position, trading him in favor of a rookie would be plausible.

Let's be honest here. Washington isn't trading Robinson. What would the market be for a running back entering the final year of his rookie contract who's never rushed for 1,000 yards? Remember, this is a historically deep running back class, and any team needing a back is more likely to wait until next month's draft to pick one and have them under contract for four seasons.

The Commanders like Robinson. He's clearly part of their plans for 2025. It would also shock no one if Washington picked one of those dynamic young backs, with Robinson and Austin Ekeler entering the final year of their respective contracts.
