Source: Vikings acquire running back Jordan Mason in trade with 49ers
After signing veteran running back Aaron Jones to 2-year, $20 million ahead of free agency, the general consensus was that the Vikings were going to take a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That might’ve changed on Saturday night as the Vikings acquired running back Jordan Mason in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. A source confirmed the move to the Pioneer Press shortly after the news broke, adding that Mason has signed a new 2-year deal with the Vikings that includes over $7 million guaranteed at signing.
The move carries very little risk for the Vikings. They only had to surrender up a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to go along with a late pick swap in the 2025 NFL Draft. A small price to pay for a player that could fill a key role in the offense.
It’s not hard to imagine Mason making an immediate impact for the Vikings as a nice complement to Jones in the backfield.
Originally undrafted out of Georgia Tech, Mason found a niche as a depth piece with the 49ers before taking over as the primary ballcarrier for most of last season with superstar running back Christian McCaffrey battling a number of injuries.
That paved the way for Mason’s most productive campaign to date as he finished with 153 carries for 789 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was officially placed on injured reserve on Dec. 7, 2024 after suffering a high ankle sprain.
Though the Vikings could still take a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft, if they decide they don’t like any of the options available when they’re on the clock, the backfield is in good hands with Jones and Mason leading the charge.
