NFL insider: New York Giants' plan of trading for No. 1 pick 'appears dead'
The New York Giants may be in the market for a veteran quarterback this offseason, but the long-standing belief has been that they will target one of the top two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL draft: Miami's Cam Ward and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.
With Ward a lock at No. 1 overall and the Giants failing to acquire Matthew Stafford via trade earlier this offseason, Connor Hughes of SNY reported that general manager Joe Schoen would attempt to trade up with the Titans.
The expectation right after Stafford, according to multiple sources, is that the Giants will pivot to the NFL Draft and attempt to trade up to the No. 1 spot. There, general manager Joe Schoen will have his choice of Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) or Cam Ward (Miami).
Those plans now appear dead in the water, reports ESPN's Jordan Raanan.
"All indications seem to be, based off free agency, that that pick will not be available to the New York Giants," Raanan said on Thursday's episode of Breaking Big Blue. "Plan A was to get Matthew Stafford this offseason. Plan B appears to be try to get the No. 1 overall pick (and) that appears dead, too."
The Titans made no effort to sign one of the top quarterbacks in free agency and while they are "open for business," they also won't risk passing on a "generational talent." Is Ward at that level? Some would argue he isn't but their offseason moves are a clear indication they intend to select a quarterback at No. 1 overall.
That could leave the Giants with Sanders if he's not scooped up at No. 2 overall, but he appears to be sliding down the draft boards.
Ultimately, the Giants are at the mercy of everyone else -- other quarterbacks and teams in free agency, and the Titans in the NFL draft. They control nothing and with regime jobs on the line, are left merely hoping some scraps fall to them.
