Daniel Jeremiah predicts Commanders will select cornerback in latest mock draft
We're through the initial wave of free agency and looking more toward the draft. The Washington Commanders were active in free agency, spending money where it needed to spend money and filling some of its gaps. They retained some players, brought in fresh faces, made some trades, and now they're looking ahead to the 2025 NFL draft, where they can pick up the last few pieces they need to get to the next level.
Mock drafts were released in abundance ahead of free agency, and now that things have slowed down, new mock drafts are being released that reflect the changes some of the teams have made. For the Commanders, Mel Kiper predicted they would select a cornerback in Maxwell Hairston out of Kentucky, and Daniel Jeremiah is of a similar mind. He predicts the Commanders will select a cornerback as well, just a different one.
Pick 29 - Washington CommandersAzareye'h Thomas - Florida State · CB · JuniorThomas is a long, rangy cornerback who can match up with some of the bigger receivers in the NFC East.
Thomas is bigger than Hairston in height and weight and is more likely to hold his own against bigger receivers than Hairston, although their prospect grades are very similar. Both players are expected to be starters in the NFL, so if it's between them, the Commanders will have to decide which player better fits their needs.
Hairston is a little bit smaller at 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds and ranks seventh among cornerback prospects. Thomas is 6-foot-1.5 and 197 pounds and ranks ninth among prospective cornerbacks. Aside from their size, each player has his own strengths and weaknesses, and in all reality, Hairston is the better cornerback despite his smaller frame.
Even if the Commanders don't draft either of these guys, it's clear that they need depth in the secondary. They will likely use their first-round pick on the defensive side of the ball. Whether it's a corner or an edge rusher remains to be seen, but expect the Commanders to focus on the defense in this draft.
