Commanders select offensive tackle in latest mock draft
Adam Peters and the Washington Commanders' front office have been busy during free agency. They have worked to provide Jayden Daniels with weapons he can throw to, protection to give him time to throw, and they've added to the defensive side of the ball to strengthen the defense. There's still plenty of free agency left, but the 2025 NFL draft is also right around the corner, just six weeks away.
The Commanders have the 29th overall pick in the draft this year after making it to the NFC Championship in 2024. In Chris Trapasso's latest mock draft for CBS, they select offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. out of Oregon.
The Commanders add more to the trenches with the high floor of Josh Conerly Jr., who can be a plug-and-play type at right tackle.
Conerly is the 5th-ranked offensive tackle and 33rd overall prospect in the draft. At 6-foot-5 and 311 pounds, he's a giant, difficult-to-move brickhouse. He is known for his athleticism and powerful hands and has a ton of upside. From The 33rd Team's scouting report:
His length and punch offer him good bite on the edges, and his foot speed shines as a trait that he can hang his hat on in his pass-set framing and in the run game. Conerly Jr. is athletic enough to pull and attack on the edges of the defense in crack toss & pin and pull concepts while also showcasing the mobility to climb up to the second level and attack.
He can be more controlled in these instances to maximize his blocks, and he could likely use some additional overall strength and power to his game to help unlock additional pathways to consistent success. But he’s still growing and improving as a player — the sky is the limit here.
Conerly will have the time he needs to work on some of the technical aspects of his game that need adjusting. The Commanders have already added to their offensive line and may not need Conerly to be an immediate starter. That doesn't mean he couldn't earn his way there, and it doesn't mean they won't start him, just that if he's not quite there, the Commanders can make sure he develops properly without being rushed.
