Bears OL Joe Thuney explains why he wanted to play for Ben Johnson
The Chicago Bears prioritized the retooling of their offensive line through several moves, including the acquisitions of Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson via trade and the signing of Drew Dalman in free agency. It was a top priority for new head coach Ben Johnson to build his offense.
Chicago's biggest get was Thuney, a two-time First-Team All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler and four-time Super Bowl winner. Thuney is one of the best guards in the NFL, and his presence will shore up the interior of Chicago's offensive line. Thuney is an elite pass blocker, and he's been the best pass-blocking guard, per Pro Football Focus, since 2021 with a 90.2 grade.
A big draw for Thuney, outside of quarterback Caleb Williams, was Johnson, who's established himself as one of the best offensive minds in the game.
"Just watching Detroit's offense over the years, every week it's 30, 40 points with really great, creative plays," Thuney said. "It's just an offense you want to be a part of. He has such a clear communicative way of describing what he wants, and you can just tell the passion and the love for the game (he has). It's infectious. I think everyone around him feels it. It's a coach you want to play for."
During Johnson's previous three seasons as offensive coordinator, the Lions led the NFL in scoring (28.2 point per game), including leading the league with 33.2 points per game last season.
While Johnson has made it clear this Bears offense won't be a replica of his former Lions squad, there's no doubt he's going to do everything he can to build this offense around Williams and make sure it develops into one of the NFL's most explosive. Even if it takes some time.
