Jonah Jackson explains Ben Johnson's expectations for Bears offensive line
In one of several moves this offseason, the Chicago Bears shored up the offensive line with the addition of guard Jonah Jackson, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams for a 2025 sixth-round pick. Jackson, who was limited to just four games due to injury last season, will be reunited with Ben Johnson, who was his offensive coordinator when the two were with the Detroit Lions.
After the Bears allowed a league-high 68 sacks on rookie quarterback Caleb Williams last season, the front office tore everything down, bringing in Johnson as the new head coach, then focused on improving the roster. Bringing in Jackson is not only a move that speaks to his talent level when healthy but also the rapport and familiarity he has with the new Bears head coach, which can help lead the charge for his new teammates.
Speaking to the media this week, Jackson discussed his experience with Johnson and what the expectations are for the offensive linemen on the team. With three new additions in Jackson, Joe Thuney, and Drew Dalman, there will be an adjustment period as they get accumulated to their new system. That new system, as Jackson said, is quite simple from what Johnson expects from the unit.
“Protect the quarterback, block for the running back," Jackson said, via CHGO. "There’s a lot that goes into that, but you’ll have to wait for Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays to see."
The offensive line's responsibilities seem pretty simple, but being in a system led by Johnson, one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, will be tasking. Creating a better run game and keeping Williams upright will help pave the way for an offense and coaching staff that understands they'll only go as far as their young quarterback can lead them while he elevates his game behind his new protection.
