The Chargers have to solidify the wide receiver position in the upcoming draft. While they could take one early on, Los Angeles could elect to address other positions in the first few rounds and wait until the final day to select a wideout.
Should they go that route, Pro Football Focus believes Tennessee's Dont'e Thornton Jr. would be the best fit for the Bolts.
The Chargers retained Jalen Reagor hoping he would be the answer to take the top off defenses, but his ineffective career play should lead the front office to look elsewhere. Thornton is a blazer (4.3-second 40-yard dash time) and deep-ball technician, highlighted by his 93rd-percentile mark in average target depth and 97th-percentile mark in yards per route run last season.
Thornton has a rare combination of height, weight, and speed, standing at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds with a 4.30 40-yard dash. He uses his blazing speed to take the top off defenses and size and frame to win in contested situations down the field.
Thornton projects as an X-receiver, which is currently held by Mike Williams. But Williams is only signed for one season, so Thornton could back him up and grow into more of a sizable role as he develops his game, which needs more refinement in the route-running department.
Thornton led Tennessee in receiving yards (661) and touchdowns (6) during the 2024 season. He averaged a whopping 25.4 yards per catch.
