HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: St. John Paul II softball opens season with a huge swing

The St. John Paul II softball team has to like the way it started its season Wednesday.

The Lions (1-0) earned a 23-11 win over Mashpee (0-2).

Ellie Kowal had three hits and scored six runs from the leadoff position. Lola Our had three hits in her first varsity game. Celia Trombly went the distance in the circle.

For Mashpee, Callie Dunn scored three runs, and had a hit and an RBI.

Monomoy 16, Nantucket 1: The Sharks (1-0) took their opener over the Whalers (0-2).

Boys Tennis

Cape Cod Academy 5, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Seahawks (2-0) stayed perfect in this early season by beating the Dolphins (0-2).

Cape Cod Academy first singles player Ben Catalano defeated Landon Richter (6-0, 6-0). Cape Cod Academy second singles player Ayden Naydenov defeated Collin Caron (6-1, 6-0). Cape Cod Academy third singles player Declan Livingston defeated Michael O’Reilly (7-6 (4), 6-4).

Cape Cod Academy's first doubles of Connor Hall and Garrett Wilson beat Ryan Clarke and Aiden Karras (6-0, 6-1). Cape Cod Academy's second doubles of Rowan Lewison and Cooper Hall topped Oakley Gully and Colin MacQuaide (6-1, 6-0).

Monomoy's first singles player Roman Pavluchenko defeated Boyan Kalpazonov (7-5, 6-4). Monomoy's second singles player Ryan Casey defeated Nik Krastev (6-3, 6-3). Monomoy's third singles player Zach Shields beat Fuller Holland (6-2, 6-0).

Monomoy's first doubles of Patrick McMahon and Blake Noonan defeated Forbes Keating and Sawyer Holland (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) ). Monomoy's second doubles of Ethan Seufert and Thomas Hereford beat Thomas Schroeder and Knox Keating (6-2, 6-4).

Nauset 5, St. John Paul II 0: The Warriors (1-0) swept the Lions (0-1) in the opener for each.

Plymouth North 5, Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks (0-2) remained winless with the setback.

Girls Tennis 

Norwell 5, Sandwich 0: The Blue Knights (0-3) stayed winless with this sweep.

Plymouth North 5, Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks (0-1) lost their opener.

Bridgewater-Raynham 4, Falmouth 1: The Clippers (1-1) fell to .500 for the season. Second singles player Genevieve Maranchie beat Eily Mitchell (6-3, 7-6 (7-3) ) for Falmouth.

St. John Paul II 5, Nauset 0: The Lions (1-1) earned their first win of the year over the Warriors (0-1).

First singles for the Lions Lily Walker beat Anjali O'Brien (6-0, 6-1). Second singles for JPII Bella Scioletti beat Sophia Votteler (6-0, 6-1). Third singles for the Lions Grace Walker beat Haley Jackson (6-0, 6-0).

First doubles Ava Powell and Kayla Katziff beat Faye Adams and Chloe Hand (6-0, 4-6, 10-7). Second doubles for the Lions Emily Desruisseaux and Joey Duhamel beat Lexa Malouin and Callie Murphy (7-5, 6-3).

Sailing

Barnstable over Milton: The Red Hawks (2-0) topped Milton for the first time since 2018. The Red Hawks were led by Brendan Wojkowski, Colt Hill, Jimmy Van Leeuwn, Tommy Moran, Eleanor Bullock, and Mena Collins.
