Vote: Who should be The Register-Guard's girls Athlete of the Week?
With the first day of spring here, athletes in the Eugene area are dusting off their baseball and softball gloves and athletes are hitting the track for an exciting season. A local basketball player earned top honors at the state tournament.
This week's Register-Guard girls Athlete of the Week nominees are:
- Miley Richardson, Monroe track and field
- Diamond Wright, Willamette basketball
- Abbi Hemenway, Cottage Grove track and field
- Soraya Dorsey, Sheldon softball
Information about each nominee is listed below. Vote for the athlete you think is most deserving at registerguard.com/sports. The poll closes at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Vote: Who should be The Register-Guard's boys Athlete of the Week?
Miley Richardson, Monroe track and field
The freshman won three individual events: 400 meters (1 minute, 7.69 seconds), 1,500 (5:45.35) and the long jump (14 feet, 4 inches) March 19 at the Johnny Sundstrom Invitational in Mapleton. Richardson also ran a third leg for the Dragons' second-place 4x100 relay (59.47).
Diamond Wright, Willamette basketball
Wright capped off her senior season being named to the 6A all-state tournament first team. At the state tournament, she scored 45 points, added 21 rebounds and 3 assists to help the No. 2 Wolverines to a fifth-place finish.
Abbi Hemenway, Cottage Grove track and field
The senior took first in the 100 (13.90) March 20 at the Siuslaw Icebreaker in Florence. Hemenway also helped the Lions' 4x100 relay team take first (54.37).
Soraya Dorsey, Sheldon softball
The junior went 1 for 3 with a run batted March 18 in to help the Irish to a 7-6 season-opening home win against West Salem.
