Vote: Who should be The Register-Guard's boys Athlete of the Week?
With the first day of spring here, athletes in the Eugene area are dusting off their baseball mitts and others are gearing up for an exciting track and field season.
This week's Register-Guard boys Athlete of the Week nominees are:
- Collin Hernandez, Thurston baseball
- Levi Hawes, South Eugene track and field
- Luke Bechen, Churchill baseball
- Aiden Koroush, Monroe track and field
- Jayden Davis, Cottage Grove track and field
Information about each nominee is listed below. Vote for the athlete you think is most deserving at registerguard.com/sports. The poll closes at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Vote: Who should be The Register-Guard's girls Athlete of the Week?
Collin Hernandez, Thurston baseball
The senior struck out 11 batters while allowing one hit and two walks in five innings pitched March 18 to lift the Class 5A Colts past 6A Sheldon, 3-0, in a nonleague contest at PK Park.
Levi Hawes, South Eugene track and field
The senior finished in first place in three individual events: 100 meters (11.56 seconds), 400 (53.17) and long jump (19 feet, 10 1/4 inches) in a March 19 home dual meet against Triangle Lake. Hawes also ran anchor on the Axe's 4x100 relay (49.39).
Luke Bechen, Churchill baseball
Batting leadoff, the senior went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a run batted in March 19 to give the 5A Lancers a 15-1 win over 6A Gresham in a nonleague road game.
Aiden Koroush, Monroe track and field
The sophomore took first place in the 400 (1:03.00), finished third in the 3,000 (10:13.0), sixth in the 800 (3:13.29) and 11th in the javelin (73-9) March 19 at the Johnny Sundstrom Invitational at Mapleton.
Jayden Davis, Cottage Grove track and field
The junior took fourth place in the javelin (112-7), 200 (26.17) and 300 hurdles (48.30) and finished sixth in the 100 (12.25) March 20 at the Siuslaw Icebreaker in Florence.
