Vote on the first Athlete of the Week for the spring high school sports season

Voting has started for the first Athlete of the Week poll for the spring sports season, with seven nominees up for the award.

Nominees are compiled primarily through results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by the sports reporters from the publications.

Nominees will also be accepted each week by sending an email to bgmsports@gannett.com by 8 p.m. Saturday.

Voting will be open until the end of the day Thursday, with nominees from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.

The nominees for the period of March 31 to April 5:

Tsadia Bercuvitz, Ithaca girls track & field: Bercuvitz swept the 1500 and 3000 at a three-team meet that included Corning and Windsor. She won the 1500 in 4:42.54 and the 3000 in 9:59.22.

Alley Crowley, Vestal girls lacrosse: Crowley had three goals and an assist to lead Vestal to its first win of the season, 8-5, over Corning.

Mason Holloway, Horseheads baseball: Holloway pitched five innings as part of a perfect game for the Blue Raiders in a 9-0 victory over Binghamton. Holloway struck out 11. Brendan Clark pitched the final two innings to complete the program's first perfect game in coach Jeff Limoncelli's tenure, which dates to 1998.

Victoria Kaufman, Chenango Valley girls lacrosse: Kaufman scored four goals in a 12-7 victory over Binghamton. Earlier in the week, she had two goals in a 10-7 loss to Maine-Endwell.

Aedan Palmer, Elmira baseball: Palmer went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, four runs and seven RBIs in a 21-1 victory over Binghamton. Earlier in the week, he struck out eight and gave up two hits in four innings during a 16-2 victory over Johnson City. Palmer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate.

Kailey Ripley, Thomas A. Edison softball: Ripley pitched a five-inning no-hitter in an 18-0 victory over Dryden, striking out 10 and walking none. She was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Earlier in the week, Ripley was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI in a 21-0 victory over Trumansburg.

Zuri Ruffin, Corning boys track & field: Ruffin ran to victories in the 100-meter dash and 200 dash at a three-team meet that included Ithaca and Windsor. His victory in the 100 came in 10.97 seconds and he won the 200 in 23.5.
