Vote for the Savannah Morning News High School Athlete of the Week in an open poll
Spring is here and the warm weather sports are heating up across the state of Georgia.
There were some excellent individual and team performances last week among athletes competing in the Greater Savannah area.
Track and field athletes showed they are ready as they start to focus on their road to the state meet as Richmond Hill hosted the Game Changer Apex Invitational on Friday with a number of impressive times and marks.
The Islands soccer team knocked off previously undefeated Jenkins in boys soccer.
In baseball, Effingham County continued to roll, while Calvary Day traveled to Las Vegas to compete in a national tournament.
This is a chance for readers to weigh in and select the Savannah Morning News High School Athlete of the Week in an open poll with no restrictions on the voting. The poll will close on Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m.
Here are this week's candidates.
Jada Brown, Richmond Hill track and field
The senior won the shot put with a throw of 43-7.75 at the Game Changer Apex Invitational and was fifth in the discus. Her shot put mark is a school record and the best in the state this season across all classifications.
Parker Lewis, Benedictine soccer
The junior netted three goals in a win over Warner Robins.
Evan Narvaez, Islands soccer
The senior had a pair of goals as the Sharks beat previously undefeated Jenkins 5-0.
Mmekom Inyang, Richmond Hill track and field
The senior, who has signed with Howard University as a heptathlete, won the 100 meter hurdles at the Game Changer Apex Invitational with a time of 14.27 and was second in the 300 meter hurdles (48.09) and second in the shot put (40-4.5). Her 100 hurdles time is eighth in the state this year across all classifications.
Coray Stafford, Jenkins track and field
The senior, who won the Class 5A state 100-meter title last year, won the 100 meters at the Game Changer Apex Invitational in 10.57 and was second in the 200 (22.11).
Jacque's King, Effingham County baseball
The senior went 7-for-12 with two doubles and four RBI as the Rebels took two of three in a Regon 1-5A series with Lakeside. King is hitting .460 with 20 runs and 20 RBI for the Rebels, who are 18-3 overall and 5-1 in region play.
Kendrick Joshua, Richmond Hill track and field
The junior won the 110 meter hurdles in 14.01 and also took the 300 meter hurdle title in 37.38 at the Game Changer Apex Invitational. Both times were personal bests. His 300 hurdles time is the best in the state this year across all classifications and his 110 hurdle time is third best overall in Georgia.
Dalton Kelley, Calvary Day baseball
The junior went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs in a win over Desert Oasis and was 1-for-3 with two RBI in a win over Valor Christian as Calvary Day went 2-2 against top-notch competition at the Bishop Gorman Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Harrison Crofts, South Effingham track and field
The junior won the high jump at the Game Changer Apex Invitational with a leap of 6-8. His mark is just an inch below the best in the state this year across all classifications.
Taliyah Headman, New Hampstead track and field
The senior won the 100 meters in 12.29 and the 200 meters (25.83) at the Game Changer Apex Invitational. She finished third in the 400 meters in 1:02.56.
Zy'Kira Anderson, Liberty County track and field
The senior won the long jump (17-6.25) and the triple jump (35-4) at the Game Changer Apex Invitational.
Jordan Gunn, Savannah Arts soccer
The sophomore had four goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Tattnall County. She has 28 goals and 13 assists on the season for the Panthers
