The polls are open! Vote for the Las Cruces Sun-News Athlete of the Week for March 10-15
The Las Cruces Sun-News will nominate several athletes for its Athlete of the Week award every week. The winner is decided by you, the readers. The award highlights the best performances from Las Cruces-area schools from the previous week. This week, there are 10 nominees from Las Cruces, Mayfield, Centennial and Organ Mountain.
Everyone is encouraged to submit nominations for the upcoming week to ncoppola@lcsun-news.com.
The poll, located at the bottom of this page, closes on Thursday at 11 p.m. There are no voting restrictions, so vote now and vote often.
Last week's winner was Kaia Renteria of Las Cruces softball, who hit two home runs and recorded seven RBIs in a 23-13 win over El Paso Riverside to earn her nomination.
Here are this week's nominations:
Ceanna McKines (Mayfield girls' basketball)
McKines tallied 12 points and seven rebounds in the Trojans' state quarterfinal playoff game against La Cueva.
Devyn Garces (Organ Mountain baseball)
Garces went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, a triple and two runs scored in a 12-8 win over Mayfield.
Gera Delgado (Organ Mountain baseball)
Delgado struck out 11 batters and gave up only one earned run on three hits in five innings in a 2-1 win over Los Lunas.
Adriana Peña (Las Cruces softball)
Peña earned three hits, two RBIs and a double in a 15-12 win over Cleveland.
Zaysha Hawkins (Las Cruces softball)
Hawkins tallied three hits, two RBIs, four runs scored, a double and a home run in a 12-2 victory against Eldorado.
Arriana Fuentez (Organ Mountain softball)
Fuentez earned two hits, a triple and an RBI in a 7-4 win over Ysleta.
Aaliyah Betancourt (Centennial softball)
Betancourt tallied 11 total RBIs and four total runs on a 7-for-8 outing at the plate across two wins over West Mesa.
Amanda Valles (Centennial softball)
Valles went 3-for-4 in a 16-4 demolition over West Mesa with five RBIs, a double and two home runs.
Stevie Jimenez(Centennial softball)
Jimenez struck out five batters and gave up two earned runs on one hit in three innings during a 21-3 win over West Mesa.
Organ Mountain boys' distance medley team (track and field)
The Knights' team, comprised of Jeron Wisner, Donnail Escudero-Montoya, Jake Medina and Corbin Coombs, finished first in the championship distance medley race at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City. Organ Mountain's team entered as the Las Cruces Sun Dragons. Wisner, Escudero-Montoya, Medina and Coombs ran the 1200-, 400-, 800- and 1600-meter legs, respectively.
