There were 3,630 votes cast this week in the race for the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Sultana’s Isac Gamez ended with a whopping 88.6 % of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The baseball player received 3,216 votes, beating out six other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Gamez drove in seven runs in a pair of victories for the Sultans as they ended the first round of Mojave River League action unbeaten. Gamez went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a run and a stolen base in a 15-5 victory over Hesperia on March 25. He followed that up by going 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base in a 12-6 victory over Apple Valley on March 27.
In the voting, Gamez beat Granite Hills’ Kathryn McCartney, who received 8.62% at 313 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between March 24-29.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
