Cincinnati Reds pull off 61-year franchise first, like it or not

MILWAUKEE – Don’t look now.

No, really, don’t look if you’re a Cincinnati Reds fan.

Gavin Lux backs away from an inside pitch during Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Rangers.

Because the Reds just pulled off something they haven’t done in 61 years – since manager Terry Francona was 5 years old – that not even the lineup’s biggest detractors would have predicted a week ago.

When Elly De La Cruz flied to right to end the Reds' scoreless third inning Friday in Milwaukee, it extended the Reds' scoreless-innings streak to 31, dating to the seventh inning of Monday's 14-3 win over the Texas Rangers.

That's the longest streak since they went 34 innings without scoring in 1964.

The franchise record is 45 in 1931.

The Reds, who tied a major-league record Thursday with a third consecutive 1-0 loss have been shut out by any score four consecutive times only twice in their history: in 1908 and during that 1931 scoreless drought.
