Reporters got the opportunity to sit down with New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore at the NFC coaches breakfast on Tuesday, April 1, during the annual NFL owners spring meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. It's the first time Moore has spoken publicly since the start of free agency and he shared some insight and updates on a number of key topics.
One subject sure to make Saints fans happy? News that training camp will be returning to the team headquarters in Metairie after it was moved to Southern California and closed to the public last summer.
"Yeah, it'll be in Louisiana. We're looking at some potential, too, see if we can go somewhere else for a shorter period of time this year," Moore said, clarifying that he meant the team is looking into scheduling joint practices with other teams during the preseason.
As for the benefits to holding training camp at the Metairie practice facility? Moore continued: "The exposure to the heat and all that sort of stuff, we think there's some value to it, just getting accustomed to that. Training camp isn't supposed to be the easiest thing in the world. There will be some challenges with the heat but that'll be a good thing for our team."
So locals will again have the chance to see their team as they work to prepare for 2025. It's the way it should always be. Last year's training camp was moved due to construction at the practice facility, but general manager Mickey Loomis made an unpopular decision to not invite fans on the West Coast to come see their team in person. Correcting that misstep is a good move. But it's been the plan all along. The Saints said last year that they'd be back in Metairie for training camp in 2025. So it's not like Loomis or Moore looked at the backlash to camp moving and then made the call to appease unhappy fans.
Either way, it'll be good to have the Saints back where they belong. Look for training camp to kick off in late July with a number of open practices for fans to come see their team.
