The New Orleans Saints need to invest in another receiving option, and the most common prototype desired is a wide receiver with a bigger frame. New Orleans needing to add a receiving threat isn't an indictment of Chris Olave.
Kellen Moore walked into the job with a high opinion of the receiver and ensured Olave will continue to be an important part of the offense. "Chris Olave has had a huge impact on this team, he's going to have a huge impact (this season,)" Moore told reporters during the NFC coaches breakfast at annual league owners meetings.
How the Saints use Olave will be interesting, and could depend on how heavily Moore wants to lean on the run. Olave is still the top candidate to lead the Saints in receiving yards if he stays healthy. To that end, Moore said Olave's history of concussions is something they'll be mindful of. But does he take that jump many have been looking for? That will largely be dependent on if New Orleans are one of the most run-heavy teams in the league. The Philadelphia Eagles were dead last in passing attempts in 2024.
It's nice to know where your offensive minded head coach stands on your top wide receiver, and that's what Moore's quote gives you. What it doesn't do is shut down the potential of drafting wide receiver in the first round. Not because you need a new lead receiver, but because Tetairoa McMillan could fill the need for a bigger wide receiver mentioned earlier. Drafting a receiver that early would likely signify at least a balance of pass and run.
Teams are looking to continuously accumulate more receivers, even if they have one of the best already on the roster. Justin Jefferson won Offensive Player of the Year, and the Minnesota Vikings still drafted Jordan Addison in the first round of the following NFL draft. The Saints should work to improve depth behind Olave, too.
