Kellen Moore on the benefits of hiring former college coaches before the NFL draft

Bo Davis made his way from Baton Rouge to New Orleans this offseason to join Kellen Moore’s inaugural New Orleans Saints coaching staff. While his proficiency as a coach will certainly come into play, that isn’t the first place he can help the Saints.

When asked about hiring Davis, Moore praised the defensive line coach’s resume, but the second part of his answer revealed an underlying benefit. Moore said, “A lot of these guys who are going through the draft process, he’s been recruiting these guys or dealing with the transfer portal. He knows all these kids so it’s going to be a huge benefit for us.”

The same can be said for defensive pass game coordinator Terry Joseph, linebackers coach Peter Sirmon and defensive assistant Robert Blanton. This is a great asset to lean into in the draft. Scouting is obviously a big component of the draft process, but interviews give teams a chance to get to know the player beyond the field. The coaches added from the collegiate level already have that knowledge.

There are some prospects from LSU and Texas, such as Bradyn Swinson, Alfred Collins, or Jahdae Barron who the Saints may have interest in. Those names jump out immediately because of the coach's direct connection. Moore is right to view the collegiate experience through a wider scope.

Davis, Joseph and the rest of the coaches who were on the collegiate level last year have intimate knowledge of the personality of players they recruited, even if the players didn't commit to that school. Possessing that knowledge before even doing interviews should be beneficial.
