Michigan women's basketball outshoots Iowa State in March Madness, advances to 2nd round

Michigan women's basketball is moving to the second round of the NCAA Women’s tournament for the first time since 2022.

After a second quarter run gave Iowa State the lead, the tandem of senior guard Jordan Hobbs, and freshmen Oliva Olson and Mila Holloway would allow the team to come back and clinch a 80-74 victory over the Cyclones.

Hobbs’ new career high 28 points would lead the way for Michigan to advance to the next round.

Turnovers lead to Hobbs hot start

The Wolverines forced seven Iowa state turnovers in the first quarter and caused some early foul trouble for Iowa State’s front court of Audio Crooks and Addy Brown. Both would have two fouls halfway into the quarter forcing them to be benched until the second.

Jordan Hobbs had the hot hand for Michigan finishing the quarter with 10 points.

Cyclones dominating turn around

Crooks found her rhythm as she returned to the game in the second quarter, allowing the Iowa State to the lead with under three minutes left until halftime.

Michigan found itself in early foul trouble, committing six in the quarter alone, led by senior center Yulia Grabovskaia.

The Cyclones built their momentum after Brown hit a field goal in the final three minutes, bringing the game to 29 a piece. Crooks stayed near the paint and would hit to free throw and make her second attempt to officially take the lead for her team.

Iowa state would go on 10-3 run to end the quarter, after Hobbs hit a three in the final seconds of the quarter, bringing the half to a score of 37-32.

On to the next round

Iowa state would lead by as many as nine points in the third, but Michigan would begin to claw it’s way back, cutting the lead to three headed into the fourth.

Freshman guard Oliva Olson would hit a jumper to allow the Wolverines to take a 60-58 lead with eight minutes in game. Both teams would continue to match each other and would bring the score within six in the final three and half minutes after Hobbs hit a three-pointer, forcing an Iowa State timeout.

Both teams continued to try and take the lead. Iowa state’s Brown would bring a the game to three, forcing Michigan to take a timeout with the score sitting at 77-74.

Olsen would officially ice the game after hitting a 15-footer and drawing a foul and ending the game.
