Vermont women's basketball will face NC State to open March Madness: Bracket update
No. 15-seed Vermont women's basketball has drawn No. 2 NC State in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
The Catamounts (21-12) punched the program's eighth ticket to March Madness on Friday night, seizing a 62-55 road victory over top-seeded Albany in the America East Conference championship game.
The Catamounts are returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023. This is the second time in head coach Alisa Kresge's seven-year tenure that the Catamounts have qualified for the Big Dance.
What to know about Vermont women's basketball's opponent?
NC State (26-6) won the ACC regular season championship with a 16-2 record in conference play. The Wolfpack advanced to the ACC tournament championship game before falling to Duke with a 76-62 loss.
A major factor will be how healthy Wolfpack's star guard Aziaha James will be. James left the ACC championship game in the first half after a hard fall, but returned in the second half.
Vermont women's basketball's previous NCAA Tournament experience
The Catamounts have made seven previous trips to March Madness. They completed back-to-back perfect regular seasons in 1992 and 1993, but lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament both times including at home in 1993.
Vermont made it three straight appearances in 1993. The Cats also made it in 2000, 2009, 2010 and 2023. In 2010, they captured their first-round win over No. 7 Wisconsin for the program's first NCAA Tournament victory.
Vermont is 1-8 all-time in March Madness.
