Duke basketball routs Lehigh in first round of Women's March Madness. Here's how.
DURHAM — No Cinderella story was being written Friday night at the expense of the Duke women’s basketball team.
Thirteen years after the Lehigh men’s team cemented their place in March Madness lore, the Blue Devil women ensured history wouldn’t repeat itself, posting a dominant 86-25 win Friday night over the Mountain Hawks to start the NCAA Women’s Tournament.
Duke moves on to play Oregon in second round play, the 10th-seeded Ducks outlasting No. 7 Vanderbilt 77-73 in overtime.
No such drama was necessary in Duke’s first-round matchup, its defensive effort contributing to Lehigh scoring 10 first-half points, a season low. The Mountain Hawks failed to score over the final six minutes of the first half, hitting four field goals during the opening 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils shot 41% in the first half, going into halftime with a 23-point advantage. Okulu Okanawa was particularly effective, scoring 10 points to go with three rebounds. Delaney Thomas assured Duke dominance on the boards, helping it to a 24-10 rebounding edge at the break.
Duke led by as many as 51 in the game. Ten players scored for the Blue Devils, with Okanawa finishing with a game-high 15 points while Thomas and Toby Fournier each contributed 11.
