AURORA — Lila Bultrowicz and Rayna Unverferth blasted solo homers, Lailah Bohanan and Sophie Retton added back-to-back doubles in the fifth and Retton tossed a complete game as Aurora softball topped Tallmadge 4-1 in its Suburban American opener Thursday.
Bohanan got the Greenmen (5-1, 1-0) going with an RBI double off the right-field wall in the first inning and Bultrowicz crushed the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall an inning later to push their lead to 2-0.
Aurora and Tallmadge traded zeroes from there until the fifth, which Unverferth led off by golfing a 2-0 pitch over the center-field wall. Bohanan and Retton plated the final Aurora run with back-to-back doubles.
Retton was masterful in the circle, yielding a single run on five hits and a walk. After the Blue Devils began the seventh with back-to-back singles, Retton responded by coercing a fielder's choice. After Tallmadge pulled within 4-1 on a walk and an RBI single, loading the bases with one out, Retton responded by coercing a grounder to third with Bultrowicz firing home to catcher Sophie Schecterman for the force at the plate. Schecterman then fired down to first where the batter had departed the bag, allowing Aurora to complete a game-ending double play.
