Gatorade: St. Johnsbury's Hauser named Vermont H.S. boys basketball player of the year

For the first time since the 2019-2020 season a boys basketball player from St. Johnsbury Academy has been named Vermont's player of the year by Gatorade.

Senior Rex Hauser has been selected for this year's award which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character. Gatorade announced state winners Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward led St. Johnsbury (16-6) to the Division I Final Four this past season. Hauser averaged 23.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 53.2% from the floor. The senior was a three-year captain and two-time 'Dream Dozen' underclassman selection by the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association.

The senior recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in the Hilltoppers 61-54 semifinals loss to Rice.

A National Honor Society member, Hauser has volunteered locally with a fundraiser to benefit a local cancer center in addition to donating his time as a youth sports official. He has also served as co-president of his school’s student athlete advisory council.

“He was a matchup nightmare for us in terms of his versatility,” said Mike Wood, head coach at Rutland High School. “He can handle the ball on the perimeter, gets downhill and can post up when they need him to. His length in their zone defensively was really problematic for us.”

Hauser has maintained an A average in the classroom. He has committed to the University of Maine where he will play baseball starting in the fall.

As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every player of the year also receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner.
