Sioux Falls Christian's Griffen Goodbary named South Dakota Gatorade boys basketball player of the year
Mar. 20—SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Christian senior Griffen Goodbary was named the South Dakota boys basketball Gatorade player of the year on Thursday.
A 6-foot-11 power forward, Goodbary has helped guide the top-seeded Chargers to a 21-1 record entering the Class A state tournament, having advanced into the semifinal round following Thursday's 66-41 victory over Groton Area.
Overall, Goodbary, the 2024 player of the year, is the fifth boys player since 1986 to win the award twice, joining Aberdeen Central's Eric Kline (1990, 1991), Mitchell's Mike Miller (1997, 1998), Pierre's Zach Hanson (2012, 2013) and Yankton's Matthew Mors (2019, 2020, 2021).
On the season, Goodbary's averaged 18 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. It's the third consecutive season the player of the year has come from Class A, with Dakota Valley's Isaac Bruns receiving the honor in 2023.
"Griffen is a young man of high moral character and has a servant's heart when it comes to interactions with his teammates and others," SF Christian head coach Mike Schouten said. "You can see his intelligence on the floor as well. He often sees things that I don't see or sees them before I do. He's a great person both on and off the court."
Ranked as the state's top recruit in his class by PrepHoops, Goodbary was a 2024 all-state first-team player and an all-tournament team representative, and has signed to continue playing basketball at South Dakota State University.
Academically, Goodbary's maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom and has volunteered locally on behalf of The Banquet, an organization helping to feed the less fortunate. He's also volunteered at Feeding America and served as both a coach and game referee for youth basketball in the Sioux Falls community.
