Boys basketball: Montevideo Thunder Hawks take home consolation championship
Mar. 20—ST. PAUL — They got it.
The Montevideo Thunder Hawks earned a trophy Thursday in the state Class AA boys basketball tournament. They beat Minnehaha Academy 83-80 in overtime for the consolation championship at Concordia University's Ganglehoff Center.
The teams were tied 39-39 at halftime and 73-73 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Thunder Hawks (26-5) got field goals from Gannon Reidinger and Brody Dack and a 3-for-4 effort from Griffin Epema from the free throw line to hold off the fifth-seeded Redhawks (20-11).
Reidinger, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, closed out his career with 30 points, eight rebounds and two assists. The Minnesota State-Mankato baseball commit was 11-for-17 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Epema, a 6-2 sophomore guard, had 23 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. He played all 40 minutes, making 9 of 14 field-goal attempts. He was 5-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Jackson Koenen added 11 points and Dack had 10 points with three steals and two assists for Montevideo. Koenen and Dack are both 6-2 juniors.
For Minnehaha Academy, Kingston Manning and George Norsman each had 20 points. Manning is a 6-3 senior forward. Norsman, a 6-5 senior forward, also had seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Noah Hamburge, a 6-2 senior guard, added 11 points and six assists for Minnehaha Academy.
