Columbus Academy boys basketball advances to first OHSAA state final since 1981
SPRINGFIELD – The Columbus Academy boys basketball team is one win away from its first state title.
The Vikings advanced to the Division V state championship game by defeating Cincinnati Summit Country Day 63-51 in a semifinal Friday at Wittenberg University.
Academy (28-0) will play Cleveland Heights Lutheran East (23-4) or Minford (25-1) in the title game March 22 at University of Dayton Arena. The Vikings are making their second state tournament appearance and first since 1981, when they lost 58-44 to Kalida in the Class A championship game.
The Vikings took control in the second quarter against Summit Country Day (16-9) despite having top scorers Theo Falkenhain and Jason Singleton on the bench for most of the quarter with two fouls apiece.
Academy coach Jeff Warstler turned to his bench, and reserves Harmon Gouhin, Jack Seymore and Charles Rubey provided solid minutes.
The Vikings opened their largest lead at 48-29 early in the fourth quarter and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Anderson Davis led Academy with 25 points and Falkenhain scored 20.
L.J. Stocks led Summit Country Day with 21 points.
The Vikings struggled from the free-throw line, connecting on 16 of 31 attempts.
