Zeeland's Hayden Pompey-Oshinski, Noah VanderVelde named Sentinel Bowlers of the Year
Zeeland bowlers Noah VanderVelde and Hayden Pompey-Oshinski knew what to expect this season.
VanderVelde was a returning state qualifier and Pompey-Oshinski had been part of the Zeeland girls state championship a year ago.
They continued the strong Zeeland bowling tradition this season, both qualifying for the Division 1 state tournament and both earning Holland Sentinel Bowlers of the Year.
"They are seasoned, veteran bowlers," Zeeland coach Tony DiLaura said. "This their fourth year competing on our varsity teams and they've been in high pressure situations many times over the years. Both Noah and Hayden have a calm demeanor on the approach and know what their doing when it comes to leading their teams by example. Noah and Hayden are both quieter leaders. They prefer to lead by their example of bowling with a mindset that is unwilling to give up."

"Hayden has a light side to her that likes to joke around with her teammates. She's a bit louder when it comes to encouraging her teammates and even shouting at the bowling ball."
Pompey-Oshinski finished 28th in the state as an individual.
"The overall season didn't go as well as the last couple have gone, but this season was definitely hard. But when I struggled and wanted to give up, I never gave up on the girls and just kept pushing to get the girls and are team to a further step forward in the game."
The Zeeland girls just missed qualifying for the state tournament by finishing fourth at regionals. Pompey-Oshinski finsihed fifth and qualified as an individual and at state took 28th, just missing out on match play at "the arena."
"I made it into the arena my freshman and sophomore year and didn’t get it for my junior year coming up short in Regionals for individuals, so not making it my senior year into the arena there were many emotions but overall was happy that I got to go to Thunderbowl one last time for my high school career it was an amazing moment that I will forever cherish and would do all over again," she said.
On the boys side, VanderVelde was the top individual qualifier at regionals. He finished 15th indivudally to make match play before being eliminated in the first round of match play.
"We changed conferences this year and this conference was way tougher than years past. This year was a little bit of a struggle because of the better competition," VanderVelde said. "This year regionals was also very competitive and the lane conditions were very challenging. The biggest thing was being consistent with your shots and making as many spares as possible and controlling what you could control. State was really fun this year for me. I had a lot of friends from our region and other regions that made it. State has a different energy to it because you know that the people that were there earned their spots. States is just a cool experience because, so few people get to go and I get to say I’ve gone twice in my bowling career and done well both times."
