Maine-Endwell girls claim NYSPHSAA Division 2 title in bowling
Maine-Endwell captured the Division 2 girls state title Sunday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Bowling Championships at Strike 'N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
It was the Spartans' first state championship and the first girls title for Section 4 since Union-Endicott in 2009. The state tournament began in 1979 and expanded to two divisions in 2018.
M-E, which placed second last year, piled up a six-game total of 5,753 to outdistance runner-up Depew of Section 6 by 132 pins. The Spartans led after the first three-game session with a 2,917, followed by Depew at 2,859.
The Spartans were led by Natalie Yale's 1206 total, fourth-highest in the 10-team competition. She had series of 655 and 551, with a high game of 238 to start the day.
Maine-Endwell bowlers occupied spots 8 to 10 in the rankings. Sarah Savage had a score of 1,118 (581-537, high game of 223), Jenna Kurtz bowled an 1,116 (518-598, high game of 253) and Reonna Smithgall an 1,109 (566-543, high game of 202).
Also for the Spartans, Alana Kelly was 12th with a score of 1,100 (559-541, high game of 200) and Joyanna Krause 25th at 1,036 (509-527, high game of 202).
Waverly boys place sixth
In boys Division 2 competition, Section 4 champion Waverly placed sixth with a score of 6,118.
Marlboro, from Section 9, won the title with a score of 6,468, three pins more than runner-up Seaford of Section 8.
Top scorer for Waverly was Derek Johnson, who ranked ninth with a total of 1,303 that included a 724 game. Other Waverly scores: Tristan Campbell 1,160, Colten Santalucia 1,150, Maison Apgar 1,148, Dominick Wood 1,143, Griffin Walter 1,002 over five games.

Prentice, Butenko lead Section 4 in composite competition
Unadilla Valley/Norwich's Jacob Prentice and Chenango Forks' Landon Butenko finished 1-2 in the boys composite Division 2 standings Saturday. Section 4 placed third in the team standings with a 6,503 total, 67 pins behind winner Section 6.
Prentice had a 1,477 total (725-752) that included games of 277 and 259.
Butenko's score of 1,418 (688-730) was highlighted by games of 278, 267 and 255.
Other Section 4 scores: Thomas A. Edison's Zach Crown 1201, Chenango Valley's Nate Adams 1,199, Maine-Endwell's Connor Whitmore 1,072, and Maine-Endwell's Ryan Staub 835 in four games.
Section 4's girls Division 2 team placed fourth with a score of 5,894. Section 2 finished first at 6199.
Jenna Jump of Union Springs/Port Byron led Section 4 with a fifth-place finish at 1,299. Windsor's Abriana Tyler was 12th at 1,209. Other Section 4 scores: Union Springs/Port Byron's Caroline Smead 1,126, Waverly's Serenity Conklin 1,095, Chenango Valley's Abby Herceg 1,082, Unadilla Valley/Norwich's Shelby Rose 1,040.
Horseheads pair top Division 1 boys
The Horseheads pair of Noah Cady and Michael Rennells placed eighth and 13th, respectively, to top Section 4 boys in the Division 1 composite event Saturday.
Section 4's team placed sixth with a total score of 6,566. Section 5 was first at 6,725.
Cady had a 1366 total, with high games of 269 and 258. Rennells, who battled back from cancer to compete this season, posted a 1341 total score led by a 241 game.
Other Section 4 boys results: Binghamton's Dominick Bernthon 1,272, Corning's Zach Sturdevant 1,228, Horseheads' Cayden Bowman 1,227, Vestal's Kyle Parks 1166.
Section 4 placed seventh in Division I girls competition with a score of 5,947. Section 11 topped the field with a 6,624.
High scorer for Section 4 girls was Corning's Kylie Downing in 11th with a 1,289. Other Section 4 results: Union-Endicott's Brooke Patterson 1,162, Vestal's Emily Kapczynski 1,154, U-E's Hannah Korell 1,105, Corning's Jadyn Odell 1,104 and Corning's Zoe Harmer 1,058.
