Kimberly boys fall to Marshfield in Division 1 basketball sectional final

Division 1 sectional final
Marshfield 62, Kimberly 35
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Kimberly’s dream of making it to the state tournament as a No. 13 seed ended in the sectional final Saturday.
Marshfield scored the final nine points of the first half, then went on another scoring run early in the second half to roll past the Papermakers.
Kimberly finishes the season with a 13-14 record. The Papermakers had advanced to the sectional final with an 85-83 victory over No. 1 seed Kaukauna on Thursday.
“The absolute opposite of the game against Kaukauna for us, so it’s deflating for the guys. I love these seniors, so it’s tough,” Kimberly interim head coach Josh Hopfensperger said.
Marshfield improves to 21-7 and will play in the state semifinals Friday at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Aaron Cullen led Kimberly with 14 points. He was the only player to score in double figures for the Papermakers.
“We struggled to make shots. But at the same time, they packed the paint on us too. That was their game plan. You could sense it early,” Hopfensperger said. “We didn’t really swing the basketball around early. They had good ball pressure. We settled a little bit.”
Brooks Hinson led Marshfield with 24 points, including 14 in the first half. He made six 3-pointers in the game.
Kimberly led 18-17 with 3:35 to go in the first half after a jumper by Mikey Wildes.
Valin Romberg answered with a 3-pointer for Marshfield, and the Tigers never trailed again.
Hinson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close out the first half and give Marshfield a 26-18 halftime lead.
Marshfield scored the first seven points of the second half to go ahead 33-18 with 16:12 remaining before Cullen made two free throws for Kimberly to stop the run.
Hinson drove for a layup, then hit back-to-back 3-pointers again and Marshfield led 41-20.
Once it had the lead, Marshfield didn’t look to shoot in the second half and ran the clock until it either got a layup or was fouled.
“They played a really good strategy in the second half,” Hopfensperger said. “They were up, they took great shots, each possession was about a minute long. They made us play defense and then we came down and tried to fire right away and the lead just continued to grow. It was tough.”
Hopfensperger thought the Papermakers were ready to play despite coming off the emotional high of beating their Fox Valley Association rival Thursday, but as Marshfield was making shots and Kimberly wasn’t, the momentum slipped away quickly.
“It’s tough because they know that they probably aren’t supposed to be in this spot, but at the same time it’s like almost at your fingertips,” Hopfensperger said. “Sometimes it’s hard to respond from a game like that, you’re riding a high, but then when things go not your way we didn’t respond immediately. I thought the guys played hard. Shots weren’t falling for us.”
