Express boys place second at NYSPHSAA Bowling Championships
The Elmira boys placed second Friday afternoon in the Division 1 competition at the New York State Public High School Bowling Championships at Strike 'N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
Elmira ended up with a pin total of 6644 over the six games. Arlington, from Section 1, captured the title with a score of 6751. Long Island's East Islip was third at 6589.
The Express cut Arlington's lead to 63 pins after putting up a score of 1189 in the fifth game. Arlington outscored Elmira, 1143 to 1098, in the final game.
Elmira was seeking its second title in the last three state tournaments and third straight for Section 4. Corning was Division 1 champion last year.
Scoring was high across the board, with the top five teams surpassing 6500. Elmira's state championship two years ago came with a score of 6314. Corning's winning total last year was 6264.
Trent Belloma was top scorer for Elmira with a 1358 total that ranked sixth among bowlers from the 10 sectional champions. He closed with a 259 after high games of 242 and 246 earlier in the day.
Elmira's Logan Card bowled a 290 game, third-highest of the day. His six-game total of 1343 was eighth-best among the boys.
The Express' Skylar Shadduck had the 10th-highest score, a 1333 that included games of 246, 243 and 245.
Other Elmira scores: Alex Gublo 1312 (269 high game), Frankie D'Angelo 1253 (245) and Payton Rozell 1083 (221).
Arlington's Braden Cassidy had the high score of 1520. Kenmore's Michael Abendschein bowled a 300 game.

Express girls placed seventh
Elmira's girls team led after the morning three-game session with a score of 2983 before placing seventh with an overall total of 5694.
Section 1's North Rockland won the title with a score of 5915, followed by Mohonasen of Section 2 at 5880 and Section 6's Frontier at 5804.
Madison Smith was top scorer for Elmira and fifth overall among the girls with a six-game score of 1209 that included opening games of 233 and 238.
Bella Wood posted a 13th-place score of 1190 for the Express, highlighted by games of 225 and 224 to start.
Also for Elmira, Madyson Wasicki had a 1061 total (190 high game), Abbi Hink a score of 1060 (193), Evaya Gardner a 1030 (206), and Izzy Stanley a score of 1029 (193).
Leading girls scorer was North Rockland's Giana Varano with a 1359. Her 290 was the top game among the girls.
