Fan poll: Who Should be the City National Bank Athlete of the Week?
As winter sports finish their seasons and spring sports head toward district play, the Standard-Times will continue accepting nominations for City National Bank Athlete of the Week throughout the high school sports year.
There is plenty of action and outstanding performances left in the high school sports season. Soccer is now in the postseason, local softball and baseball teams began their district schedules and the track and field season hurdles toward district meets.
The Standard-Times will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.
Several standouts were nominated for the most recent City National Bank Athlete of the Week award.
Nominees
Don Diego Rios, Big Spring boys track - He ran a 2:00.09 in the 800-meter run at the Angelo State Spring Break Invitational.
Joaquin Escamilla, Grape Creek boys track - He had a 40-08.00 jump in the triple jump event at the Angelo State Spring Break Invitational.
Colter Farmer, Central baseball - In 5 innings pitched he had four strikeouts and one pickoff. He also went 3 for 4 at the plate, two hits, two RBIs and a walk-off single in a win over Midland Legacy.
Aubrey Garcia, Central softball - She pitched seven innings and gave up eight hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts in a win over Midland Legacy.
Briggs Jones, Wall boys track - He ran a 21.86 in the 200-meter dash at the Angelo State Spring Break Invitational.
Makenna Martin, Grape Creek girls track - She ran a 1:02.72 400-meter dash event at the Angelo State Spring Break Invitational.
Brooklynn Reyes, Reagan County softball - In a doubleheader against Van Horn, she had two wins and 18 strikeouts as a pitcher, three home runs, and eight RBIs behind the plate.
Stefani Trevino, Sonora softball - She pitched six innings and gave up no hits with 11 strikeouts in a win over Miles.

How to nominate for the next award
Nominations for next week's award are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@gosanangelo.com or by messaging the Standard-Times on X (formerly known as Twitter) @sast_sports.
Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will start on Tuesday and close at 11 a.m. Thursday. The winners will be announced afterward.
Athletes who win Athlete of the Week can not win the award twice for the same sport. An athlete can be nominated in a different sport, but can't win the award more than three times in a school year.
