COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Odessa College completes four-game sweep of WTC

Apr. 4—The No. 9 Odessa College softball team had no trouble in closing out its series sweep against Western Texas College, winning by scores of 8-0 and 6-0 in a doubleheader Friday at the Wrangler Softball Complex.

The Lady Wranglers extended their winning streak to 12 games and remain at the top of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings.

Odessa College also defeated Western Texas College by scores of 9-0 and 8-4 Thursday in Snyder.

Odessa College hasn't loss since an 11-4 defeat to Temple College back on Feb. 23.

With Friday's victories, the Lady Wranglers improved to 27-4 overall, 8-0 in WJCAC.

The Lady Westerners fell to 13-29, 4-8.

"I think it's nice that we got a couple of shutouts," Odessa College head coach Doug Eastman said. "It says a lot about our pitching staff. We got all four of our pitchers in the game. We scored enough runs. I think our offense is going to light up when the weather gets warmer. It's always tough to hit when it gets cold."

The four-game series was originally supposed to begin Friday and finish up Saturday.

However, the series was moved up a day due to the inclement weather that's anticipated for Saturday.

"We're always ready to play," Eastman said. "Just give us a day and we'll be there. We're supposed to get some rain (Friday night) and Saturday. We want to keep the schedule rolling. We don't want to get behind."

The Lady Wranglers got going in the first inning with a triple by Reganied Franka.

She would soon slide home on a sacrifice to give Odessa College a 1-0 lead.

"She's just a fire plug in that leadoff spot," Eastman said. "Every time she gets on, she steals third. She just makes so much happen on the bases. Really, she hit two home runs today and the wind just blew them back but she hit the ball well all day long."

Odessa College's Shelby Navarrete got in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning.

Neve Adams' sacrifice scored Navarrete to double the Lady Wranglers' lead.

Diveli Cherry's single into center field scored Jaycie Pacheco for a 3-0 Odessa College lead with the game still in the third inning.

Franka's double then scored Cherry for a 4-0 lead.

Blazevich then added an RBI, scoring Franka and the hosts remained firmly in control with a five-run advantage.

The Lady Wranglers continued to hold the Lady Westerners scoreless heading into the bottom of the third inning.

Franka led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to get on first.

She would eventually make it to third to get in scoring position with one out.

The Lady Wranglers then loaded the bases and Navarrete was next to bat.

She wouldn't disappoint, scoring Franka and Peyton Archer for a 7-0 Lady Wrangler lead.

Western Texas College got runners on base in the top of the sixth as the Lady Westerners tried to get something going.

However, the Lady Westerners couldn't capitalize and remained at zero runs.

A run by Adams ended the game on the run rule.

Just like in game one, Franka got things going for the Lady Wranglers with her run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

A run by Pacheco made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning for the hosts.

A triple RBI by Milley extended Odessa College's lead to 5-0 shortly after.

Navarrete led off the bottom of the third with a home run to make it 6-0.

Next up for the Lady Wranglers is a road trip to Frank Phillips College next week, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. April 11 in Borger.

"You can't underestimate anyone," Eastman said. "They played Midland College pretty tough. "They're a scrappy team. We just ...
