The start of April signals many things for different spring sports college teams. It's the heart of the season for baseball and softball teams, BC tennis and swim teams are aiming at conference finals this month and even one fall team, BC's football program, will host a offensive line/tight ends skills youth camp on Saturday.
Cal State Bakersfield
Baseball: The Roadrunners returned home after a Big West Conference weekend in which they lost the first two games of a series at Cal State Fullerton, but earned a 6-5 victory in Sunday’s finale. CSUB scored four runs in the top of the first, saw the Titans score five over the next couple of innings. The Roadrunners scored on a ground out RBI and a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to win it. CSUB (9-20 overall, 4-5 Big West) returns to action with a home conference weekend series against UC Riverside. Friday and Saturday games are at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday’s game at Hardt Field is at 1 p.m.
Softball: CSUB played a weekend Big West Conference series at home against UC San Diego with a doubleheader Friday and a solo game on Saturday. The Roadrunners won two of three games, winning 6-5 in nine innings in the opening game, dropping an 11-3, five-inning decision in the second game and then posting a 1-0 triumph in eight innings. Freshman Maalia Cherry continued her offensive prowess with two homers, including the game-winner, in the 6-5 win. The Tritons’ respect for Cherry resulted in her being walked 10 times in the series. Cherry now has 11 homers and 30 RBIs for CSUB (14-21, 5-7 Big West.
M/W Track and Field: There were some Roadrunners who shined at the West Coast Relays last weekend at Clovis’ Veterans Memorial Stadium. It started with Friday’s results in the hammer throw. Javier Toro and Thomas Richardson went second and third at 208 feet, 9 inches and 189-4, respectively. Saturday’s highlights were Sky Odom winning the women’s triple jump at 39-6 and Jacob Yagers finishing second in the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 51.35 seconds. Yagers did not run the 1500, which would have been his first meet since breaking a 33-year-old school record in the event. He ran 3:44.40 at the Conover Classic at Cal Poly on March 22. CSUB’s next meet is Saturday’s Johnson/Joyner-Kersey Invitational at UCLA.
Women’s Golf: The Roadrunners were in eighth place in the Fresno State Classic heading into Tuesday’s final round at par-72 Coppin River Country Club. Sarah Mutai was the top golfer for CSUB after two rounds. She was tied for 11th place with rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday. This tournament is the final tune-up before CSUB competes in the Big West Conference April 13-15.
Women’s Beach Volleyball: The Roadrunners will host Cal State Northridge at 10 a.m. Saturday at CSUB’s Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex, located at the Student Recreation Center. The Roadrunners lost to CSUN March 22 during the Big West Challenge, 3-2. One thing to look for is to see if the team of senior Ella Erteltová and sophomore Vivi Kaelin can add to their win totals after becoming the program's all-time career wins leaders, each securing 45 victories.
Bakersfield College
Baseball: A walk-off solo home run by Dadjael Salcedo in the ninth inning gave the Renegades a 7-6 home win over College of the Canyons Saturday to complete a three-game Western State Conference sweep of the Cougars throughout last week. It improved BC’s record to 14-12 and 5-4 in WSC play. BC opened a three-game series against LA Mission on Tuesday. The teams were at Mission Tuesday, will play at BC in a 2 p.m. Thursday game and then back to Mission on Friday.
Softball: The Renegades closed out a tough week on Saturday by splitting an afternoon-evening home, non-conference doubleheader against El Camino. BC lost 4-0 in the early game and then won a tight 1-0 contest in game 2. The win snapped a ...
