Boys Best of the Week: Highland opens baseball season with big win over a Final Four squad

Highland returned from a series of scrimmages in South Carolina over its spring break and picked up a huge first win of the season.

Facing a Division IV state semiffinalist from a season ago, the Scots dominated Hillsdale 12-1.

Kort Sears pitched two innings to get the win, while Caleb Youngman and Zach Church pitched in relief. Sears led with a double, while Rhett Russell and Jacob Barber both produced three RBIs.

  • Mount Gilead’s Wyatt Young hit a bases loaded, one-out sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lift the team to a 9-8 win over North Union. Cameron Vickers was the winning pitcher. Cole Fricke, Nik Coder and Kaden St. Clair all had two hits for MG.
  • Northmor scored seven runs in the third inning and beat Mansfield Senior 8-4. Ethan Hinton and Jack Bowdre combined for a seven-hitter, striking out eight and walking nine. Bowdre also tripled and singled, and Nicholas Armrose doubled among the team’s eight hits.
  • Northmor also got a no-hitter from Trevor Brubaker in a 10-0 win over Lucas. He struck out seven and walked no one. Cole Cuffman scored three times, and Brooksten Beck doubled and singled for the Knights.
  • River Valley’s Hayden Kanagy hit a home run while going 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in four runs, but Carrolton prevailed 15-14. Pate Crawford had a triple, and he and Hudson Pollock ended with multiple hits for RV. J.R. Bates walked three times for the Vikings. The Vikes were held to two hits in a 15-1 loss to Granville.
  • RV swept a doubleheader with East Knox. In a 15-12 victory, Bates went 3-for-4, and Crawford and Hayden Foltz each drove in three runs. Aiden Bowers, Pollock and Hunter Faust all had two hits, and Kanagy added three steals. In a 4-3 win, Kanagy hit a game-winning single in the seventh to go with a double. Bowers and Pollock both had two hits. Bates and Dallas Kelly teamed for an eight-hitter, striking out five and walking none.
  • Ray J Scott-Harbolt hit a two-run home run, and Keaton Ward and Lucas Keller both hit two-run doubles as Marion Harding beat Wynford 10-0. Gavyn Baumgarther tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts, singling and doubling at the plate.
