Washburn basketball has first player hit the transfer portal

TOPEKA — The first player has hit the portal from Washburn men’s basketball roster. Verbal Commits D2 shared that sophomore Brayden Shorter placed his name into the transfer portal after his successful season with the Ichabods.

The starting guard helped Washburn reach the Final Four for the first time since 2001 this season. He was also the best 3-point shooter in all of Division II basketball. He led the country with 119 3-pointers made which was five more than anyone else in the nation.

Washburn Ichabods sophomore Brayden Shorter (20) shoots for three against MSU Moorhead Dragons senior guard JaMir Price (3) in the second half of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championship game inside Lee Arena on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

Shorter started 33 of Washburn’s 34 games this season. He averaged 15.5 points and 4 rebounds per game. He was the second-highest scorer for the Ichabods this year. The Springfield, Missouri native made a big leap this season after averaging 8.4 points per game in the 2023-24 campaign.

Washburn beat out Sioux Falls and NAIA’s Evangel University for Shorter's signature out of high school.
