Hurricanes basketball veteran Nijel Pack reportedly enters transfer portal

The expected overhaul of the Hurricanes’ basketball roster continued Monday as veteran Nijel Pack, a key member of the Hurricanes’ 2023 Final Four team, has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Pack spent three seasons with Miami, playing in 69 games. The guard averaged 13.6 points with three assists and 2.7 rebounds across those three seasons.

Pack played in just nine games for Miami this season as he dealt with an ankle injury. He averaged 13.9 points in those nine games. The Hurricanes finished the disappointing 2024-25 season at 7-24, including 3-17 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Pack’s departure is the latest in a line of prominent player departures after Jai Lucas took over the Hurricanes. Former five-star prospect Jalil Bethea and four-star prospect Austin Swartz have already entered the portal, but Bethea has left the door open to returning to Coral Gables.

Lucas said when he was introduced as the new head coach that he expected a nearly complete roster turnover before next season begins.

“It’s going to be a big overhaul because you just never know,” Lucas said. “My expectation coming in was that I would need to get at least 13 new players just because that’s the way it is now. But you never know … it could be a little bit lower.”
