Vote now for the Daily Advertiser Athlete of the Week from March 31-April 6

Spring high school sports are in full swing, including district tournaments galore for high school baseball in Lafayette Parish and its surrounding areas.

The 337 has been home to some elite matchups from senior nights to championship-caliber dogfights. No matter the circumstances, players are giving it their all as the push for postseason is on now for baseball and softball.

Off the diamond, athletes have been setting personal and school records in meets across the state. With so many events going on, the Daily Advertiser had plenty of options to choose from for this week’s Athlete of the Week poll.

This week's poll includes athletes from the following sports: softball, baseball, and track and field. The poll can be found at the bottom of the story and closes on Friday.

Here are the candidates for Athlete of the Week for March 31-April 6 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Reece Dommert, baseball, Iota

In the Bulldogs' senior night matchup vs. Mamou on April 2, Dommert had one of the hottest bats. The junior finished with a double and single and drew two walks. He also finished with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base in a 7-6 victory.

Liberty Greene, softball, Kaplan

On the mound for the Pirates in their district matchup versus St. Thomas More, the sophomore pitcher ended the game with a home run on offense and got the win in the circle beating the Cougars 7-4.

Dylan Helms, baseball, Teurlings Catholic

The Rebels are Class 4A District 4 champions once again after beating St. Thomas More 5-2 on April 4. Helms threw 64 strikes and picked up six Ks along the way. The junior helped his team finish district play with a perfect 10-0 record.

Luke Hewitt, baseball, Catholic-New Iberia

Against Houma Christian, Hewitt pitched for perfection as he threw his first no-hitter. The sophomore left-hander struck out 14 batters and only walked two in a 3-0 victory.
