Cameron Hutson and KJ Torbert played starring roles in a special season for the East Lansing boys basketball team.
The duo were major factors as the Trojans captured their first state championship since 1958 and in the process became the first team from Greater Lansing to win a boys basketball title in the state's largest division since Holt won the Class A crown in 2005.
And the roles Hutson and Torbert played in that success have resulted in both repeating as first team all-state selections on the Michigan Sports Writers Division 1 team.
Hutson, a senior and Saint Louis signee, finished his career with 1,589 points. He averaged 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks for the Trojans.
Torbert, a junior and Division I prospect, surpassed 1,000 career points this winter and heads into this senior year with 1,253 points. He averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Hutson and Torbert helped the Trojans close the season on a 23-game winning streak that included CAAC Blue, district and regional titles. East Lansing won six of its seven state tournament games by at least 17 points behind them.
East Lansing coach Ray Mitchell was named the Division 1 coach of the year for his role in the Trojans' 28-1 season. He helped East Lansing earn the No. 23 ranking in the MaxPreps national basketball poll. Mitchell helped his alma mater break through this season after East Lansing had its run end in the state quarterfinals in 2023 and 2024.
Earning honorable mention all-state recognition in Division I were Waverly junior Derek Thomas II and Mason seniors Levi Stambaugh and Cason Carswell.
