Kellen Moore's evaluation of Spencer Rattler has already begun. It started in last year's draft process, before Moore even thought about coaching the New Orleans Saints. The Philadelphia Eagles had Jalen Hurts, but they, of course, evaluated all prospects. Moore walked away feeling that Rattler had "a ton of tools." After a year in the NFL, Moore seemed to walk away pleased with Rattler.
Rattler went winless as a rookie, but he also played most games without Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed or a healthy offensive line and a few games without Alvin Kamara. These "challenging circumstances" were something Moore kept in mind when evaluating the young quarterback.
"Results can be uncontrolled variables a little bit in his circumstances," Moore said. "What you want to focus on is noting is, he's going through the right process. Is he making good decisions? Is he going through his progressions? Is he hanging in the pocket?"
Moore felt Rattler did "a lot of those things." Now going into Year 2, it's time to build on those steps and string them together more consistently. Moore looks at the second offseason where players get more comfortable and get a true offseason. Before your rookie year, the offseason is filled with draft preparation. After that, the offseason begins to slow down and you get familiar with the NFL timeline.
Rattler is one of the more interesting players to monitor this upcoming season. He may not play a snap for the Saints outside of preseason, but he will be attempting to show to coaches he can be the starting quarterback in 2026 in practice.
