Spencer Rattler should factor in Saints' decision at quarterback in the NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints are going on a tour of visiting with the quarterbacks during the pro day cycle. Derek Carr's contract restructure locks him in as the starting quarterback this year, but he isn't the quarterback of the future. That's what Kellen Moore is hoping to find.

When making this decision, part of the draft process should be Spencer Rattler's evaluation. Rattler shouldn't stop the Saints from drafting a quarterback in the first round. If Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders is picked by the Saints, they are the clear-cut quarterback moving forward, with an opportunity to start at some point this season. Jaxson Dart is a prospect who sees his stock vary depending on who is talking about him. If the Saints select him in the first round, he would fall into the category with Sanders and Ward.

Every other quarterback drafted after that, you should ask yourself if they have more potential than Rattler. If the answer is no, the next question should be is there another position where I can get better value.

New Orleans has enough holes to fill to where this should factor into the thought process of drafting a quarterback in the middle rounds. Carr is your starter, and Rattler holds a developmental role. Do you need two quarterbacks holding that same role, when you could grab a defensive lineman that will get snaps in your rotation?

Quarterback is the most important position, so maybe the answer to that question is yes. Investing in potential at quarterback is difficult thing to criticize. Expectations are low for quarterbacks drafted in Round 3 or later isn't high, so the reward of hitting would greatly outweigh the risk of missing. Still, when you have a young quarterback with developmental potential, he should be considered when looking for another player in that category
