Oklahoma State women's basketball stunned by South Dakota State in March Madness upset

Oklahoma State looked to have a good handle on South Dakota State following the first half, but then Paige and Brooklyn Meyer happened.

The No. 7 Cowgirls (25-7) had a great defensive showing in the first half and had a seven-point lead at the break. But the No. 10 Jackrabbits (30-3) made quick work of the deficit and eliminated OSU, 74-68, in the first round of the 2025 women's NCAA tournament.

Brooklyn Meyer, Paige Meyer points vs. OSU

OSU did a good job of containing SDSU's leading scorers, Brooklyn and Paige Meyer, in the first half as the duo scored a combined eight points and OSU led 31-24. Haleigh Timmer picked up the slack with nine points in the first half.

But the defense didn't hold up in the second half as the Meyers wreaked havoc on OSU and posted a combined 25 points in the second half. Brooklyn finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Paige had 16 points and eight rebounds.

How SDSU women's basketball pulled off upset over OSU

OSU had a strong offensive game with all five starters finishing in double figures, but couldn't keep its defense going, even with center Tenin Magassa's career-high eight blocks.

OSU sophomore guard Stailee Heard posted a double-double of 10 rebounds and 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

The game remained close at the start of the second quarter before the Cowgirls took advantage of the Jackrabbits' poor shooting and held SDSU without a field goal for the final six minutes of the half. Guard Anna Gret Asi got hot in the frame and scored all eight points in the 8-2 run to finish the second quarter.

Turnovers were a problem for SDSU, which coughed it up 11 times in the first half. The Cowgirls took advantage, posting seven points off the Jackrabbits' five first-quarter turnovers.

But SDSU tightened its play in the second half and OSU did not. The Cowgirls allowed 38 points in the paint, and SDSU won the dominated the rebounding battle, 47-29.

Even with SDSU heating up in the second half, the Cowgirls still had a chance late in the game. Brooklyn Meyer played a more timid game defensively down the stretch when she got her fourth foul midway through the fourth quarter.

Asi came through with a big 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to cut the deficit to four points, but SDSU pushed it to a 6-point lead on two Madison Mathiowetz free throws with 20 seconds left.

Who does SDSU women's basketball play next?

The Jackrabbits now extend their win streak to 20 consecutive games and will face No. 2 UConn in the second round on Monday. The Huskies put on a show against No. 15 Arkansas State, blowing out the Red Wolves 103-34.
