3 things to watch for the Sixers in final 10 games of the season
There are only 10 games left in what has been a miserable 2024-25 season for the Philadelphia 76ers. They were expected to contend for a championship, but injuries derailed any hope they had as they sit at 23-49 and 7.5 games back of the Miami Heat for the final play-in spot in the East.
With the play-in tournament essentially out of reach, this will be the final 10 games the Sixers will play in this current season. Philadelphia will look to do its best to be in the best position to keep its top 6 protected pick for when the lottery rolls around on May 12.
With that being said, there are games still to be played and developments will happen. Here are three things to watch for in this final stretch of the 2024-25 season in Philadelphia:
Can Grimes finish strong?
Since joining the Sixers at the deadline, Grimes is averaging 22.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 38.7% from deep and 50% from the floor. In the month of March, he's averaging 28.0 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 51.7% from the floor and 39.8% from deep. He has been terrific in every sense of the word. As the season winds down, Grimes will look to finish strong before he enters restricted free agency this summer. One has to wonder if a team will throw a lot of money at him--perhaps the Brooklyn Nets--to see if the Sixers will match the offer sheet.
Continue developing Edwards as a shooter
Over his last five games, Edwards is shooting 18-for-36 from deep. For those scoring at home, that's good for 50%. On the season, the undrafted rookie is shooting 37.1% from deep. If the Sixers can continue to develop and unlock Edwards as a shooter, it would be one of the better developments of the season. While his isolation scoring is helpful, that will not be his role in future seasons. When the 2025-26 season gets underway, he will play more of a 3-and-D role next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey so the Sixers should continue tapping into his 3-point shooting.
Can Butler be in the future rotation?
Another deadline acquisition, Butler is averaging 9.6 points and 4.4 assists while shooting 40.6% from the floor and 28.8% from deep in 18 games with nine starts. The next 10 games should show the Sixers whether Butler can be the backup point guard in 2025-26 or in the rotation at all. He is a steady ball-handler who can take defenders off the dribble, which could be all the Sixers need off the bench, but one has to believe Philadelphia would like a dynamic option who can put up points in a hurry.
