Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen’s Athletes of the Week, March 24- April 6

This past week marked the start of the Iowa high school soccer season, while the track and field season continued to charge full steam ahead.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen's high school Athletes of the Week for March 31-April 6. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week's winners. Voting closes at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Athletes are listed in alphabetical order by last name.

Girls

Iowa City Liberty's Morgan Bennett (20) is a nominee for the Press-Citizen's girls Athlete of the Week.

Morgan Bennett, Soph., Iowa City Liberty

Bennett was a scoring threat during Liberty soccer’s 5-2 win over Central DeWitt on April 1.

She scored two goals to open the season against the Sabers.

Abigail Burns, Jr., Iowa City High

Burns placed second in the 400 meters at the Spartan Girls Invitational on April 3.

The third-year Little Hawk ran a time of 1:00.10.

Grace Hoeper, Sr., Solon

Hoeper earned first place in the 400 meters at the Mount Vernon Relays on April 3.

She posted a personal-best time of 1:03.41 to clinch gold.

Reese Litton, Sr., Iowa City Regina

Litton played stellar as a goalkeeper during Regina soccer’s 1-0 win over Solon on April 1.

She racked up eight saves to shut out the Spartans in Regina’s season opener.

Eva Slaymaker, Fr., Clear Creek Amana

Slaymaker helped CCA soccer earn its first win in a 2-1 victory over West Liberty on April 4.

The first-year Clipper scored her first goal of the season against the Comets.

Boys

Jordan Alavez, Jr., Clear Creek Amana

Alavez earned his first goal as a senior during CCA soccer’s 4-0 shutout over Mount Pleasant on April 3.

He also dished out an assist to help the Clippers win its season opener.

Iowa City Regina's Laird Holden (18) is a nominee for Press-Citizen's boys Athlete of the Week.

Laird Holden, Jr., Iowa City Regina

Holden dished out the ball during Regina soccer’s 3-2 win over Solon on March 31.

The third-year Regal collected two assists against the Spartans.

Eli Kampman, Jr., Solon

Kampman placed first in the 200 meters at the Mount Vernon Relays.

He crossed the finish line with a time of 22.90, a personal record.

Iowa City High's Jackson Nichols-Lindsey (4) is a nominee for Press-Citizen's boys Athlete of the Week.
