LSU softball falls to Texas A&M, suffers first sweep of the year

LSU softball was swept for the first time this season. The Tigers fell at No. 3 Texas A&M on Sunday by a final score of 4-1. The loss comes after LSU lost 12-7 on Friday and 9-7 on Saturday.

LSU couldn't get the offense going on Sunday. LSU only's extra base hit was a double from shortstop Avery Hodge, who led LSU with two hits on the day. LSU's lone RBI came from catcher Maci Bergeron, who played Hodge with a single.

All four of Texas A&M's runs were surrendered by redshirt junior pitcher Tatum Clopton. Sydney Berzon pitched one scoreless inning in relief of Clopton.

On Saturday, a seven-run first innings from Texas A&M put LSU in a hole. The Tigers responded with five runs in the third, but it wasn't enough.

Beth Torina's squad entered the weekend ranked No. 5 in the sport, but that ranking will slip after three straight losses. LSU now sits at 35-8 on the year and 8-7 in SEC play.

This is LSU's second series loss of the year -- the Tigers dropped two of three to No. 10 South Carolina at the end of March.

LSU's roster is still one of the most talented in the country and the Tigers may remain in the top-10 nationally, but LSU now sits at 8-8 in conference play. Earning a top-eight seed would bolster LSU's chances of returning to the Women's College World Series, but the Tigers have some work to do on the resume.

With no midweek contest, LSU won't return to action until it travels to Texas for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 17.
