The Auburn Tigers completed their weekend sweep of the LSU Tigers on Sunday with a 3-2 win. It was the first time Auburn had swept LSU since 1988. LSU entered the series with just three losses on the season, and that was doubled by Auburn after Sunday. Auburn entered the weekend ranked No. 12 in the USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll. They will surely move up in the rankings on Monday after a 4-0 week.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Andreas Alvarez got the start for Auburn on Sunday. It was his fifth start of the season with a 1-0 record. Alvarez pitched four scoreless innings allowing just two hits and zero runs. He was relieved by Griffin Graves in the fifth after Michael Braswell was walked and former Auburn Tiger Chris Stanfield doubled to left field. Fortunately, Graves would get Auburn out of the inning with zero runs scored. Graves was awarded the win after his 3.1 innings pitched. He faced 13 batters and had three strikeouts.
Auburn scored all their runs in the first and second innings. Chris Rembert was walked by LSU pitcher Chase Shores to get on base with one out. Ike Irish then doubled to left field to advance Rembert to third base. Auburn got on the board after a double by Cooper McMurray to score both Irish and Rembert to give Auburn a 2-0 lead. To begin the second inning for Auburn, Bristol Carter was walked. He would score Auburn’s third run when Deric Fabien grounded out into a double play.
Auburn carried that 3-0 lead into the eighth inning before LSU put some runs on the scoreboard. Ethan Frey was walked by Graves, and then Daniel Dickinson doubled to have two runners in scoring position. Auburn made a pitching change and went with Dylan Watts. Steven Milam grounded out to second, but Frey was able to score to make it 3-1. Dickinson would score after Jake Brown singled to the left side to get LSU within one run. Watts got Auburn out of the inning after striking out Luis Hernandez.
Watts finished the game in the ninth by retiring all three batters faced. That included a strikeout of Stanfield for the second out. Derek Curiel was the third out when he popped up in the infield. The win gives the Tigers an overall record of 26-10 and 9-6 in the SEC. They will return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to play Jax State. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN+.
