No. 8 FSU baseball sweeps Virginia Tech behind strong weekend from starting pitchers

Chase Williams returned to the Florida State baseball lineup after missing a month with injury, and he made an impact in a series sweep over Virgina Tech.

Williams knocked in two RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a triple, one of his two hits in the game, and scored a run to account for three of the No. 8 Seminoles (28-7) four runs in the 4-2 win over the Hookies on Sunday. He finished the weekend 5-for-10 with three RBI and a walk.

The Seminoles move to 11-4 in conference play and pick up a first series sweep since the Boston College series in March.

On the mound, Wes Mendes delivered a strong performance with 5.2 innings thrown. He allowed three walks and struck out four with one earned run on six hits, half of which came in the first inning, on a career-high 105 pitches.

Mendes' outing completed a strong weekend for the Seminoles starters as Jamie Arnold and Joey Volini threw gems in Saturday's doubleheader.

His lone run allowed came in the first. After a pair of lead-off singles, a Sam Tackett sacrifice fly scored Jared Davis from third base. Mendes steadied himself on the mound after allowing another single, as he recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Mendes's high pitch count was a symptom of long at-bats and he stayed in control the rest of his outing. He allowed four base runners before he was replaced by Peyton Presscot in the sixth.

The Seminoles remained down a run until the fourth inning. Max Williams led off with a single on the first pitch of the inning, which was followed by a Myles Bailey double to put two runners in scoring position. A Drew Faurot walk loaded the bases for Cal Fisher.

Fisher would strike out, sending C. Williams to the plate. He flew out to center field, getting enough distance to allow M. Williams to score from third base, but he gave Virginia Tech its second out.

A Brody DeLamielleure ground out ended the inning and stranded two runners, and leaving the Seminoles with limited damage in a high-leverage situation.
