This week's special edition of the Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week determined our top local girls athlete for the winter sports season.
Fossil Ridge swimming and diving standout Sydney Ovesen took top winter honors in the Fort Collins area after going back-to-back above the pool.
The senior diver repeated as the Colorado Class 5A state champion in 1-meter diving. She tallied a season-high to take her second consecutive title, scoring 527.10 points in 11 dives.
The future Colorado State University diver finished with a flourish, scoring a 62.4 on her final dive to seal a blowout win by more than 30 points.
Ovesen's overall score was more than 20 points better than her state-title total last season. She also won the Fort Collins City Meet and finished second in the Northern Conference league meet.
The diver's victory also helped Fossil Ridge finished seventh as a team in the 5A swimming and diving championships.
Ovesen won the Blue Federal Credit Union fan poll with a heavy majority, earning 72.1% of the vote.
That beat out other fantastic performances from her fellow nominees:
- Tiana Guzman, Timnath basketball (runner-up with 12.4%)
- Mariah Gonzalez, PSD wrestling
- Cody Monajjem, Wellington swimming
- Ellayna Potter, PSD nordic skiing
- Reyleigh Hess, Windsor basketball
- Ella Gaca-Thiele, Fossil Ridge swimming
