This week's special edition of the Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week determined our top local boys athlete for the winter sports season.
Windsor Charter Academy basketball's Kellen Ball took top winter honors in the Fort Collins area after a senior season to remember.
Ball led the Firebirds to even greater heights in just the program's third officially sanctioned CHSAA season.
The senior guard helped WCA go 25-3 and take third place in the Colorado Class 3A state tournament.
Ball averaged over 13 points and 4 rebounds per game while also swiping 1.5 steals per game and shooting 41% from 3-point range.
He was WCA's two-way leader and ultimately earned 3A first-team all-state recognition.
Ball finishes his career as the school's all-time leading scorer to date, hitting 1,000 career points in a January win over Brush.
The Firebirds point guard won the Blue Federal Credit Union fan poll by a slim margin, earning 49% of the vote in a highly competitive vote.
That beat out other fantastic performances from his fellow nominees:
- Hayden Williamson, PSD ice hockey (runner-up with 44.2%)
- Keagan Oakes, PSD Nordic skiing
- Madden Smiley, Windsor basketball
- Billy Greenwood, Poudre wrestling
- Evan Perez, Windsor wrestling
- Robert Kendall, Windsor wrestling
The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees every Monday, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11 p.m. Wednesday and the winner named on Thursday.
Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Saturday) and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the five nominees each week.
