Former Dolphins WR coach joining Commanders staff

Former Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Wes Welker is back in the NFL coaching ranks as a member of the Washington Commanders' staff, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Welker, 43, spent three seasons on Mike McDaniel's staff in Miami before he was fired earlier this year. The only other coaching change made by the Dolphins after an 8-9 finish to the 2024 season was to fire Danny Crossman as the team's special teams coordinator.

The Dolphins got big numbers in the last three years out of their star duo of receivers, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. However, the team struggled to identify a third option or develop young pass catchers.

Prior to his coaching career, Welker was a prolific receiver in the NFL who spent three seasons with the Dolphins before becoming a perennial Pro Bowler with the New England Patriots. Welker finished his 12-year playing career with 9,924 receiving yards and 50 touchdown receptions.
